[2026-07-27] Korea Breaks Ground on ‘Korea Light Source’ — $840M 4th-Gen Accelerator to Power Semiconductor, Battery and Drug R&D
Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Basic Science Institute broke ground on July 27, 2026 on the ‘Korea Light Source (KLS),’ a 4th-generation storage-ring synchrotron facility in Cheongju’s Ochang district.
The project carries a total budget of KRW 1.1643 trillion and targets completion by the end of 2029, offering light 100 times brighter than Korea’s existing 3rd-generation facility for semiconductor, battery and drug-development research.
