[2026-04-04]South Korea Approves AI Synthetic Data and Hydrogen Energy Regulatory Sandbox Initiatives

South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy has approved 26 regulatory sandbox projects in AI and hydrogen energy.
These initiatives enable AI-based medical services and advanced hydrogen storage technologies under relaxed regulations.
The first round of approvals was granted on April 2, 2026, with implementation and further project recruitment planned.

The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment is recruiting businesses for a regulatory sandbox on pyrolysis recycling of waste plastics from January 19 to February 27.
Key projects include demonstration of pyrolysis feedstock and residue recycling, e-labeling for household chemicals, and upcycling of agricultural by-products.
Selected participants will conduct demonstrations for up to two years, with government support of up to 120 million KRW and regulatory exemptions.
