South Korea has commenced construction of the Southern Inland Railway connecting Gyeongbuk and Gyeongnam.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 6, 2026, marking the official start.
On January 23, President Lee Jae-myung emphasized that regional decentralization and balanced growth are now national survival strategies during a town hall meeting in Ulsan.
He discussed shifting from a single-capital system to a ‘5 regions, 3 special zones’ structure and highlighted Ulsan’s role in manufacturing and AI transformation.
President Lee also visited a traditional market, engaging with merchants and calling for public support on economic, industrial safety, and regional development issues.
