[2025-12-17]Ministry to Promote Heat Pumps for Greenhouse Gas Reduction

The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment plans to support 3.5 million heat pumps by 2035 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5.18 million tons. Priority will be given to areas without city gas supply, social welfare facilities like elderly care centers, and facility-based farms.

On the 16th, the Ministry announced the heat pump distribution activation plan at the Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Ministers’ Meeting and Growth Strategy TF held at the Government Complex Sejong. Heat pumps are eco-friendly devices that do not burn fuel, thus emitting no carbon dioxide, and can replace fossil fuel heating.

The plan includes expanding support for distribution by sector and stage, providing incentives, improving distribution activation systems, and strengthening the industrial ecosystem. Priority support will be given to areas without city gas supply, single-family homes with solar installations, social welfare facilities, and agricultural heating system transitions.

Minister Kim Sung-hwan expressed that this measure is expected to be the starting point for decarbonization in the building sector, and the ministry will strive to quickly prepare a comprehensive blueprint for heat energy that considers both decarbonization and industrial competitiveness.
