On June 16, 2024, the Korea Fire Agency announced the official implementation of its ’10 AI and Advanced Technology Strategies for Firefighting’ to proactively address complex disasters such as climate crises and electric vehicle fires. This initiative aims to overcome the limitations of traditional manpower and experience-based systems by integrating world-class ICT into disaster management. The agency will focus on four key areas: ultra-wide information systems, digital infrastructure, advanced equipment innovation, and promotion of K-Fire exports. Key strategies include the ‘AI-based Next-Generation 119 Integrated System,’ which manages all fire resources nationwide, and the upgraded ‘Firefighting Aviation Integrated Control Platform’ that visualizes helicopter and drone locations and weather in 3D. AI will analyze data collected by drones and robots to suggest optimal resource deployment and fire spread routes. The agency is also developing unmanned firefighting robots, unmanned surface vessels, and tethered drones, as well as early detection systems for EV battery fires and high-performance non-clog pumps for urban flooding. The 2024 R&D budget has been increased by about 65% to 50.3 billion KRW.

To protect frontline personnel, the agency prioritizes developing advanced safety gear such as vision devices, exoskeleton suits, and carbon fiber helmets. The Korea Fire Agency is accelerating the international commercialization of K-Fire and expanding into global markets, linking with ODA projects to promote the excellence of Korean firefighting systems. Acting Commissioner Kim Seung-ryong emphasized a complete transition to data- and AI-driven scientific disaster management, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to ‘life respect and public safety first.’ Advanced technology will serve as a strong support for both responders and citizens.

If these ten strategic tasks are successfully implemented, Korea’s disaster response capabilities are expected to reach world-class levels. The integration of AI and digital technology enables proactive responses to emerging risks, while expanding K-Fire exports will strengthen national technological competitiveness. Enhanced responder safety, increased public trust, and the creation of a virtuous cycle in the global firefighting industry are anticipated. These changes are set to establish a new standard for future disaster management.
