South Korea will serve as the chair country for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly for one year in 2027. This announcement was made during the 16th IRENA Assembly held in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from January 11 to 12, 2024. Although South Korea has been an active member since IRENA’s inception, this is the first time it has been designated as the Assembly chair. The appointment reflects international recognition of South Korea’s renewable energy-focused policies and leadership.
IRENA, established in 2011, is an international organization with 171 member countries dedicated to accelerating energy transition and expanding renewable energy worldwide. Representatives from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the assembly, with Lee Won-joo, Director General for Energy Transition Policy, serving as the chief delegate. As chair, South Korea will preside over assembly meetings, set key agendas for global renewable energy expansion, and lead inter-country cooperation. This role is expected to support South Korea’s energy transition and decarbonization initiatives.
Lee Won-joo stated, “This designation as chair confirms the international consensus on our government’s renewable energy-centered transition policy.” He added, “By successfully hosting the next assembly after a year of preparation, we aim to elevate Korea’s status in global clean energy governance and achieve tangible results in international cooperation, such as securing overseas projects.” Cho Gye-yeon, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that “becoming the chair of IRENA, the only international organization dedicated to renewable energy, demonstrates Korea’s commitment to promoting international cooperation in energy transition.”
South Korea’s appointment as IRENA Assembly chair strengthens its international leadership in renewable energy and provides an opportunity to play a pivotal role in global energy transition discussions. The country is expected to actively collaborate with the international community to expand renewable energy and address climate change.
