[2025-12-19]Memorial Ceremony Marks 1st Anniversary of Jeju Air Crash

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is holding a memorial ceremony on December 29, 2024, to mark the first anniversary of the Jeju Air passenger plane crash at Muan International Airport. The event, themed “Remember 12·29,” commemorates the victims, comforts bereaved families, and reaffirms commitments to aviation safety and accident prevention.

The memorial activities will run from December 20 to 29 and include various programs. A nationwide citizens’ memorial ceremony will be held on December 20 at Bosingak in Seoul, and a regional memorial for Gwangju and Jeollanam-do citizens will take place on December 27 at the May 18th Democratic Square in Gwangju.

From December 22 to 29, a “Digital Memorial Hall” will be open to the public at seven locations including Gimpo Airport, Incheon Airport, Seoul Station, and Gwangju Songjeong Station, allowing citizens to leave messages and view related photos and videos. A pilgrimage program will also be held from December 22 to 28 at Muan Airport, where exhibits and photos documenting the accident will be displayed.

The official memorial ceremony will be held on December 29 at Muan International Airport, with around 1,200 attendees including government officials, National Assembly members, bereaved families, rescue workers, and citizens. A moment of silence marked by sirens will begin at 9:03 a.m., followed by the main ceremony at 10 a.m. featuring wreath-laying, memorial videos, speeches, and performances.
