The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment announced that it will sign a business agreement with Busan Metropolitan City and Korea Water Resources Corporation for ‘AI Transformation (AX)’ in the water supply sector. This agreement was made due to the increased complexity of water management caused by frequent extreme floods and droughts and the need to manage new trace pollutants.
The government aims to expand the successful AI models of the national water supply to local water supplies by establishing a cooperation system among the government, local governments, and public institutions. The three organizations will actively promote joint cooperation in policies, infrastructure, and technology for the application and spread of AI technology in the water supply sector.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment will establish policies and support measures for the advancement of local water supply operation systems. Busan Waterworks Headquarters will lead the AI pilot project by introducing AI technology to the Myeongjang Water Purification Plant. Korea Water Resources Corporation will share its experience in AI introduction and operation at national water purification plants and conduct technical diagnostics.
The three organizations will form a working group to promote regular policy and technology exchanges and plan to expand this pilot project’s achievements to various local governments. Through this, they aim to establish a real-time monitoring and control system for water quality and water supply accidents and expect to reduce water production costs by more than 12 billion KRW annually.
