요약 본문

The Cultural Heritage Administration has designated the ‘Sangju Heungam Seowon’ located in Sangju City, Gyeongsangbuk-do as a national cultural heritage site. Sangju Heungam Seowon is a seowon based on the compromise between the Giho School and the Yeongnam School during the late Joseon Dynasty, founded in 1702, received its inscription in 1705, and was relocated to its current location in 1762.

Sangju Heungam Seowon is dedicated to Song Jun-gil, a scholar of the Giho School lineage that extended from Yi I to Kim Jang-saeng, and a spiritual pillar of the Seoin Noron faction. His posthumous dedication to Sangju Heungam Seowon was influenced by the support of the ruling Seoin Noron faction and his connections to Sangju.

The layout of the seowon features learning spaces in the front and ritual spaces in the back. Heungamsa houses inscriptions bestowed by King Sukjong in 1705 and autographs from 1716. The lecture hall Jinsudang adopts the Yeongnam School style with an open front and windowed back. The entrance Habancheong, used by lower-tier residents compared to those in the east and west dormitories, is a rare instance in seowons.

Sangju Heungam Seowon provides valuable insights into the distribution, composition, operation, and socio-economic foundations of the Seoin Noron faction in the Yeongnam region during the late Joseon Dynasty. The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to continue discovering and systematically preserving, managing, and utilizing outstanding cultural heritage resources.
