The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promoted various commemorative projects to mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between Korea and Japan this year. As part of this, it has agreed to resume the ‘Junior Diplomat Exchange Program’ between the diplomatic authorities of the two countries from this year.
This program began as a follow-up to the “Joint Declaration on a New Japan-Korea Partnership for the 21st Century” agreed upon by President Kim Dae-jung and Prime Minister Obuchi in October 1998. It was conducted from 1999-2001 and 2012-2017. It is being resumed following an agreement between the diplomatic authorities of the two countries this year.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to dispatch one junior diplomat to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan for about two weeks starting from December 11, and to receive Japanese Foreign Ministry staff at an appropriate time next year.
This exchange program is expected to contribute to enhancing mutual understanding and trust between practical diplomats of both countries and to the activation of exchanges between the diplomatic authorities.
