The Korea Forest Service (led by Commissioner Kim In-ho) held the ‘2025 International Forestry Cooperation Merit Award Ceremony’ at the Government Complex in Daejeon on the 10th to honor individuals dedicated to practical diplomacy. This award was presented in commemoration of the UN-designated ‘International Mountain Day’ on December 11.

The Korea Forest Service identified and encouraged eight individuals who excelled in five key areas: climate change, international wildfire cooperation, biodiversity, sustainable timber use, and inter-Korean forest cooperation. Among the awardees, Kim Young-bin from the Seed Vault Center at the Korea Arboretum and Garden Management Institute received recognition for the adoption of the ‘Seed Conservation Project for Submerged Countries’ resolution by the IUCN.

Kim Young-bin expressed his honor and emphasized the Seed Vault Center’s commitment to contributing more significantly to global biodiversity. The Seed Vault, which preserves seeds of wild plants globally at around -20 degrees Celsius in underground storage facilities, currently operates only in Norway and South Korea.

Commissioner Kim In-ho thanked the awardees for their dedication to raising the nation’s stature on the international stage and urged them to lead the response to climate crises and global forestry disasters with their expertise and passion.
