The Rural Development Administration held the ‘3rd ASTIS Data Utilization Competition’ on December 4 at its headquarters’ international conference hall, selecting provincial agricultural research institutes and municipal agricultural technology centers that provided outstanding digital rural guidance services. ASTIS is a system that provides tailored information on scientific farming, rural guidance education and training, farming consultancy and field technical support, and agricultural technology to rural guidance project managers and farmers.

The top institutions utilizing ASTIS were selected as the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research Institute and the Cheongju-si Agricultural Technology Center. The Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research Institute has been expanding the system that automatically collects and links scientific farming service applications made through unmanned information kiosks by farmers visiting municipal agricultural technology centers, and uses the data for customized technical consultations and work execution. The Cheongju-si Agricultural Technology Center has computerized the most-used scientific farming services by local farmers, significantly improving work efficiency, and rapidly notifying analysis results of agricultural water through ASTIS alerts, based on database data for customized support for farmers.

The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research Institute was selected as the top institution in the ASTIS regional hub category. The institute has established a two-way system for real-time sharing and collaboration of project progress status between provincial and municipal offices using ASTIS. It also collaborates with the private sector on the practical application of drought and pest diagnosis technology based on satellite imagery and AI, providing data-driven farming services to swiftly identify and address issues faced by local farms.

The Rural Development Administration plans to continue advancing ASTIS by incorporating user feedback and best practices from award-winning institutions, and will establish a phased system for sharing the progress of central and local rural guidance projects. RDA’s Director of Rural Support, Kwon Cheol-hee, stressed that data and digital-based rural guidance services are key to quickly and precisely solving agricultural issues, and promised to accelerate the digital transition of rural guidance services.
