The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a joint situational review meeting on December 10, presided by Yoon Ju-seok, Director of Consular Safety, with 10 diplomatic missions in Japan regarding the recent trend of earthquakes in Japan.

On the night of December 8, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the northeastern sea area of Japan. On December 9, the Japanese government issued ‘aftershock warning information,’ advising vigilance for possible aftershocks or large-scale subsequent earthquakes over the next week.

At this meeting, they reviewed the safety situation of our nationals in the area and discussed measures to ensure their future safety.

The Korean consulates in Sendai and Sapporo among others in Japan have been continuously checking the safety of our nationals and disseminating safety notices to those staying or visiting there. They are closely monitoring local conditions in preparation for emergencies. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to continue taking necessary measures to protect our nationals while keeping a close watch on related situations.
