The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that South Korea has been confirmed to host the 4th UN Ocean Conference in June 2028. This decision was made during the UN General Assembly held at the UN headquarters in New York on December 9.

The UN Ocean Conference, held every three years to implement ‘UN Sustainable Development Goal 14,’ is the largest and highest-level international conference in the marine field with participation from around 15,000 people, including 193 UN member states, international organizations, and NGOs. The 4th UN Ocean Conference will be a major turning point for establishing the future direction of maritime cooperation beyond 2030, two years before the deadline for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The 3rd UN Ocean Conference held in Nice, France in June 2025 saw the attendance of over 15,000 people, including 60 world leaders, discussing various marine issues such as prevention of marine pollution and sustainable fishing, urging international action. The 4th conference will be jointly hosted by South Korea and Chile, with South Korea engaging in assertive hosting activities since agreeing with Chile in April 2024.

The government plans to use the 4th UN Ocean Conference as an opportunity to showcase South Korea’s marine technology, industry, and policies to the world, turning it into a stage for high-level diplomacy. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries also signed an MOU with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs for comprehensive cooperation to ensure the successful hosting of the conference.
