[2026-01-18]KFDA to Release Tobacco Harmful Substance Test Results in October

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced plans to officially disclose the results of tobacco harmful substance tests in October. This initiative is based on the Tobacco Harmful Substance Management Act, which took effect in November last year, aiming to systematically manage and publicly share information on tobacco harmful substances. Tobacco manufacturers and importers are required to commission tests at designated institutions by the end of this month and submit the results to the MFDS. The main goal is to ensure the public’s right to know and minimize health risks associated with tobacco.

The MFDS is coordinating with testing institutions to efficiently schedule tests and plans to promptly designate organizations that meet international standards such as ISO 17025. An online system for submitting test results will be launched this month, and all submitted data will be systematically managed for future policy development and evaluation. Information on tobacco harmful substances will be promoted through various channels, including social media, to ensure public understanding. Research and collaboration with related ministries will continue to provide useful information to consumers.

To minimize confusion in the industry, the MFDS is holding online policy briefings and providing guidance on test requests and information disclosure procedures. The agency is also developing testing methods for new types of tobacco products. From April 24, analysis methods for liquid-type e-cigarettes containing synthetic nicotine have become applicable, and standardization of testing for products such as cigars, water pipes, and nicotine pouches is underway. The scope of analysis for potentially harmful substances in conventional and heated tobacco products will also be gradually expanded.

Moving forward, the MFDS will focus on scientific verification of test results based on the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. The agency aims to provide accurate and reliable information on tobacco harmful substances, contributing to public health protection, smoking prevention, and the creation of a smoke-free environment. This policy is expected to significantly strengthen the public’s right to health. The MFDS will continue to develop tobacco harmful substance management policies in cooperation with relevant organizations.
