[2026-01-14]Presidential Sejong Office Design Contest Marks Key Step for Administrative Capital

The Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency (MACCA) has officially launched the design competition for the Presidential Sejong Office, a core facility for completing the administrative capital. The competition aims to create a historic building that enhances national prestige and fosters public pride. Key design focuses include elegant architecture, improved communication between the president and staff, increased governmental efficiency, top-level security, and harmony with public engagement. These priorities are aligned with the national symbol zone master plan to maximize symbolic value.

Through this competition, design proposals are sought for the Presidential Office, residence, crisis management center, workspaces, and public communication facilities, covering a total floor area of 40,000㎡. Additionally, phased construction plans considering the potential future relocation and expansion of the entire Presidential Office will be proposed. The schedule includes a site briefing this month, submission and evaluation of entries in April, and final selection of the winning design by the end of April. The winner will receive a 12-month basic and detailed design contract worth KRW 11.1 billion.

The evaluation process is divided into two rounds, with public voting introduced to ensure citizens’ voices influence the selection. This method, first implemented in last year’s national symbol zone master plan competition, has been refined for this event. Public voting will be held for the top five entries advancing to the second round, with comprehensive explanatory materials provided to enhance public understanding. The top-voted entry will be included in the final decision, strengthening public input.

MACCA Commissioner Kang Ju-yeop emphasized that this design competition marks a significant starting point for completing the administrative capital, expressing hope for many high-quality submissions that reflect national pride and public expectations. By enhancing transparency and citizen participation, the competition sets a new paradigm for public architecture. With future expansion and relocation considered, the outcome is expected to balance national symbolism and practical functionality.
