The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has urged drivers to exercise caution against traffic accidents caused by icy roads during winter. From 2020 to the recent five years, a total of 4,112 traffic accidents occurred due to road icing, resulting in 83 deaths and 6,664 injuries. Of these accidents, 78% (3,198 cases) were concentrated in December and January, and more accidents occurred on clear or cloudy days than on snowy or rainy days.
According to the Traffic Accident Analysis System (TAAS) of the Korea Expressway Corporation, the highest number of accidents—798 cases—occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., when temperatures are low and traffic volume increases during rush hours. The fatality rate was highest between noon and 2 p.m., at 3.8 deaths per 100 accidents.
The ministry warned that braking distances on icy roads can increase up to seven times compared to dry conditions. It emphasized checking weather and road conditions before driving, identifying frequently icy road sections, and maintaining sufficient distance from other vehicles. Sudden braking, acceleration, and sharp steering should also be avoided.
Director Hwang Gi-yeon of the Prevention Policy Bureau urged, “Drivers should always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and adhere to safe speeds, regardless of weather conditions during winter.” The use of snow chains and winter tires is also recommended for snowy conditions.
