[2025-12-16]Personal Information Commission Strengthens Public Sector Data Protection

The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), chaired by Song Kyung-hee, held a ‘Public Institution Personal Information Protection Measures Briefing’ on December 15 at the LW Convention Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. The briefing was organized to firmly establish a ‘preemptive risk prevention system’ in the public sector amidst the recent occurrence of various personal information leakage incidents.

The briefing focused on evaluating vulnerabilities through personal information protection level assessments, sharing excellent and insufficient cases of personal information impact assessments, introducing new AI impact assessment standards, and strengthening safety measures for public systems. The PIPC presented specific cases of ‘personal information protection level assessments’ to help public institutions diagnose and improve their own vulnerabilities.

The PIPC distributed a collection of excellent cases to help institutions check often overlooked protection measures and enhance practical preemptive capabilities. They also shared major cases of personal information impact assessments with attendees, aiming to reduce risk factors from the design stage of personal information processing for safer handling.

In addition, in line with the recent spread of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the PIPC introduced ‘AI impact assessment standards’ and proactive protection measures in new technology environments. The PIPC explained the strengthened safety measures that public system operators handling large-scale personal information must comply with, emphasizing that technical and managerial protection measures, such as access control and log inspection, should act as a ‘firewall’ to protect citizens’ information.
